The Certified Coding Associate (CCA®) is a competency-based (knowledge and experience) credential that validates the skills and knowledge of coding professionals and demonstrates mastery of CCA responsibilities supporting business growth and quality health care.

Workshop Objectives

Based on ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT®, this in-person workshop has been designed to provide both new and experienced coders with a review of the CCA exam domains and assist them in strengthening and reinforcing competencies needed to prepare for the exam. This workshop will serve as a valuable supplement to a candidate’s overall test preparation plan. Each domain item in the workshop contains information specific to that content area as well as practice test questions.

All participants will receive workshop handouts and a copy of the CCA Exam Preparation, Sixth Edition book, published by AHIMA.

AHIMA members receive a discount on the workshop. 

It is recommended attendees bring all of the following books to the workshop for exercises:

  • ICD-10-CM code book
  • ICD-10-PCS code book
  • CPT code book

Workshop Objectives – Attendees will:

  • Benefit from a structured review of and exercises on the examination domains
  • Become aware of needed areas for focus in test preparation
  • Benefit from a review of application of coding guidelines
  • Benefit from a review of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT®/HCPCS Level II codes
  • Have increased confidence in their level of readiness for the CCA certification exam

Who Should Attend the Workshop:

Any interested professionals (no experienced required) with a minimum knowledge of the health care industry, as well as anatomy & physiology, pharmacology, and medical terminology (such as, nursing school graduates).

CCA Exam Eligibility:

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and it is recommended that they have one of the following:

  • 6 months coding experience directly applying codes; OR
  • Completion of an AHIMA approved coding program (PCAP Program); OR
  • Completion of other coding training program to include anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, Basic ICD diagnostic/procedural and Basic CPT® coding.

Exam Format and Content Outline:

Exam Time: 2 hours – no breaks
Number of Questions on exam:

  • 100 multiple-choice questions (90 scored/10 pretest)

Domain 1 – Clinical Classification Systems (30-34%)
Domain 2 – Reimbursement Methodologies (21-25%)
Domain 3 – Health Records and Data Content (13-17%)
Domain 4 – Compliance (12-16%)
Domain 5 – Information Technologies (6-10%)
Domain 6 – Confidentiality & Privacy (6-10%)

*Note: The CCA exam will not be administered at the workshop. Attendees may schedule this at a later date through AHIMA.

MBA/HCM, RHIA, CHDA, CDIP, CCS, CCS-P, FAHIMA,AHIMA-approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer, Senior Director | HIM Practice Excellence, CDI/EHR Melanie Endicott, MBA/HCM, RHIA, CDIP, CCS, CCS-P, FAHIMA, is senior director of HIM Practice Excellence for AHIMA. In her role she provides professional practice expertise to AHIMA members, the media and outside organizations on coding and clinical documentation improvement (CDI) practice issues. She authors material for and supports AHIMA online ICD-10 coding education platforms. She also serves as faculty for the AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS Academies, CDIP Exam Preps, and CDI Academies. In addition, Ms. Endicott is a technical advisor for the Association on ICD-10-CM/PCS, ICD-9-CM, CPT coding and CDI publications.

Ms. Endicott received her bachelor of arts in health information management from Carroll College in Helena, MT and her master’s of business administration and health care management from the University of Phoenix. Prior to joining AHIMA in 2004, Ms. Endicott served as the program director and lead instructor of Spokane Community College, where she still teaches in an adjunct capacity. Prior to her faculty position, she was a health information analyst at a large acute care hospital where she did both inpatient and outpatient coding. Over the past 17 years, she has been a frequent presenter on coding, CDI and HIM-related issues both locally and nationally. She has also been an educator in the health information management programs at the University of Cincinnati, Stephens College, and Loma Linda University.
